Sewing Guide - Part 2 - Reading a Pattern

Now that you have picked out your pattern, it's time to view all the valuable information it contains within. You should always read your pattern instructions all the way though before you begin any sewing project you never know what supplies(such as special presser feet for your sewing machine) might be hidden with the directions that weren't in the list of materials. The information in this guide is based on using a pdf pattern as opposed to using one of the big four printed pattern companies.

COVER/FRONT PAGE - Has a picture and a title. States what size doll pattern will fit.

TERMS OF USE - Usually explains how you may use the pattern. If in doubt, unless you created the pattern NEVER EVER SHARE OR SELL THE PATTERN BY ANY MEANS WITH ANOTHER PERSON! Most designers are fine with  you selling the items that you've made with their patterns as long as you give them credit for the design. As a rule of thumb I always give credit to the pattern designer whether it was required or not.

*LIST OF SUPPLIES* - Tells you what you need to complete the project

CUTTING LAYOUT - Show you how to cut your pattern pieces, gives the best usage for cutting your fabric.

DIRECTIONS - Should always be followed in the order given for beginners. More seasoned seamstresses my have alternative ways to complete the steps.

PATTERN PIECES - Print exactly as pattern has stated. Once printed always measure the little square to make sure it's exactly the size that the designer has stated, otherwise if it's off your finished garment will not be correct.

IN CONCLUSION

I believe that it's important to read your pattern before you even hit the fabric store so that know exactly what you'll need. There's nothing worse than starting a project, getting halfway through only to find out you don't have something because it was never stated in the list of materials. In my next post, Sewing Supplies, I will list and explain the use of many sewing supplies used on a regular basis.
